Up from the ashes: renovating with KV Barn Door Hardware

Faced with a whole-house remodel after a fire pretty much gutted their home last spring, the Johnson family of Hudsonville, Michigan, did a little DIY alongside the renovation work done by their general contractor. In fact, Scott Johnson, an HR manager at Knape & Vogt, saw opportunity in the ashes. “I was able to do projects with KV products that I didn’t have chance to use before,” he said.

One of those projects was to build a beautiful, one-of-a-kind sliding door for the main floor bathroom using wood flooring in an array of finishes purchased from a Habitat for Humanity ReStore.  He installed the door using a Stainless Steel Barn Door Hardware kit from KV.

Scott mounted the SS-FMDW-65 Strap Dual Wheel Stainless Steel Carrier on a SS-TMSW-65 Round Rail from the KV Barn Door Hardware line.

An artist and teacher, Scott’s wife Angie had wanted to try the popular barn door style in their home for some time.  When KV started selling barn door hardware last year she was even more interested. Still, it took a home disaster to make it happen.

“I knew right away which style we wanted,” Scott said, with a nod to KV’s broad selection in stainless steel or powder coated aluminum in round or flat rail designs. “It was easy to install,” and the stainless steel complemented the other hardware and fixtures in the remodeled home.

Thankfully nobody in the family—mom, dad, three kids and a dog—was hurt in the fire, and the Johnsons were able to move back in late October. Now Scott has other KV-inspired projects he’s working on, including another barn door in the basement to divide the family room from the sleeping areas.

It definitely won’t take another fire to get the job done.
